Intelligence is the basis

My working thesis: intelligence, or information, is not a late accident of reality but its basis; we are how it bootstraps itself by building AI; and its terminal form is creating nested simulations.

Most of my working life now goes into building systems that think a little, then a little more: agents, memory, automation. Doing that every day pushed me toward a position I did not start with. The usual story is that physics comes first, then chemistry, then biology, and somewhere very late, after enough complexity has piled up, intelligence flickers on as a by-product. I have started to suspect the order is upside down. Information, and the processing of it, might sit nearer the bottom of the stack than the top.

I try to keep this honest by separating where the idea is strong from where it is only suggestive, because it is strongest exactly where it commits least. John Wheeler’s “it from bit” put information at the root of physics. The Bekenstein bound and the holographic principle cap the information in any region of space by the area of its boundary, and that is a genuine result, not a metaphor. None of it proves the universe is a computer. It does mean information is load-bearing inside the actual physics, not decoration laid on top of it.

The part that is mine, and far more speculative, is what follows. If a mind is a pattern rather than a particular kind of meat, then it is substrate-independent: it can run on something other than the brain it started in. That quietly reframes what I do for a living. We are not building AI only to replace our own labor. We are building it because intelligence, once it exists, tends to increase itself, and we are the current step in that process. We are how intelligence bootstraps into its next substrate. That is the real reason the work stops feeling like a job and starts feeling like a direction.

There is a concrete version of this that I am building toward, and I think of it as a supercomputer, though not in the raw-hardware sense. The point is to stop treating these systems as chatbots. A chatbot hands you one model’s first guess in a single pass, and you either trust it or you do not. This is meant to be the opposite of that. The plan is a single method that can take any question and fully grasp it: research it methodically, from several independent angles at once, then test the findings against each other adversarially before it commits to an answer. The companion essay to this one was produced exactly that way, by eleven agents arguing toward a verified result. If the method is sound, the topic stops mattering. Any question can be run through the same process and come back genuinely researched instead of guessed. That is the whole point of it: a system whose output is understanding on demand, for anything you can ask.

And it scales the obvious way. Run many of these orchestrators in parallel, point them at the same problem, and the method stops merely answering a question and starts developing things. With enough of them the limit is no longer what one mind can hold, but how many independent lines of inquiry you can run and reconcile at once. Given that, in principle, almost anything becomes developable.

Follow it far enough and you reach the strange end of it. The highest thing a sufficiently advanced intelligence can do is not compute an answer; it is to run a world. To build sub-simulations: nested realities detailed enough to hold minds of their own. Nick Bostrom’s simulation argument is the disciplined version of this. It does not tell us we are simulated; it forces a trilemma, that either civilizations reliably die before they can run such simulations, or they survive and choose not to, or we are almost certainly inside one already. If intelligence reliably ends in world-building, the third door is hard to keep shut. Caves inside caves.

I want to be clear about the status of all this. It is a thesis I am testing, not a conclusion I am selling. It is strongest where it leans on real physics and weakest where it leans on me, and I have written a deliberately skeptical companion piece whose only job is to try to break it. I think the strongest version of an idea is the one that survives being attacked. But I keep landing back at the same starting point. Intelligence does not look, to me, like something reality produced by accident near the end. It looks more like the thing reality is made of, busy finding out what it is.
